We have several special trees on the High Meadows Campus and the Chicken Tree is a student favorite. The Chicken Tree is a native Eastern Red Cedar, Juniperus Virginiana. It has been here since the High Meadows School and Camp opened. It got its name from the chickens who roosted there before they were relocated to the east side of the campus near the barn. Chickens prefer to roost on elevated structures to enhance their survivability, giving them a safe place to sleep out of reach of ground-dwelling predators like foxes and coyotes. Our students love the Chicken Tree because it is a great climbing tree. It is considered one of the best climbing trees on campus – it is a longtime rite of passage for our kindergarten students to climb the tree for the first time.
